Hamilton & Jones
Greensboro, PA
4 Gallon Crock
Item No. 23-007-50

A real beauty. An Antique 4 Gallon Gray Salt Glazed Stoneware Hamilton & Jones Cobalt Stenciled and Decorated Crock. That's an extremely long phrase, and this is an extremely beautiful Crock! A wide mouthed stoneware storage jar, to be exact. It stands 14" high, 8 7/8" wide at mouth (not counting handles) and 8 7/8" wide at base. Notice the lovely swelling taper to the waist, very very graceful...definitely not just straight up & down. This crock is about as clean and pristine a crock as I've come across in quite some time. Hamilton & Jones was arguably the most renowned and respected of the Western Pennsylvania stoneware makers of long ago. Absolutely NO cracks, NO hairlines, NO spiders, NO fry, No restoration. NO leaks, I tested it by filling it with four gallons of water. All original, intact and antique. This is NOT a reproduction, it is well over 100-130 years old, and originated straight from the dispersal sale of a 7th generation Pennsylvania farm! Very clean and fine. Nice color and nice cobalt. Both the top and bottom rim edges are unchipped. On the inside, the interior is glazed with an unusually beautiful brick red glaze. The stenciled maker's mark reads: "HAMILTON & JONES GREENSBORO, PA." The face of the crock is covered and decorated with just gobs and gobs of cobalt garlands, flourishes, stars and assorted decorations. Really a most pleasing display. The curved applied lug handles are sound and solid, permanently affixed with NO separation. This is a truly fine large Salt Glazed Crock, and has a great sharp ring when rapped with a knuckle.
