A. Conrad
New Geneva, PA
3 Gallon Crock
Item No. 23-014-50

A very nice piece of A. Conrad Stoneware. Conrad was a potter in New Geneva, PA in the mid to late 1800's. Many of his examples are lacking in decoration, but this one is just the opposite. This 3 Gallon Jar stands 13 1/2 inches tall, and is 9 1/2 inches across from ear to ear. There is a one inch wide blue cobalt stripe at the top, and both ears are finger-painted with heavy blue. Above the Conrad stencil, there are 2 sets of floral decoration, and below, there is the 3 for the gallonage mark, with stenciled roses, leaves and acorns to either side of the 3. A blue cobalt rose is in the center. The crock does have light stain marks from use, and there is a 1 inch chip on the left ear. The right ear has some roughage. There are no cracks or hairlines in this piece of stoneware, that was lovingly well used.
