Knotts, Swindler & Co. Palatine, WV 4 Gallon Crock Item No. 23-029-50
Wow! What a great crock!! A 4 gal highly decorated crock from Knotts, Swindler & Co., Palatine, WVA. A rare name! This fine example of Palatine area pottery dates from last half of 19th Century [1850-1900]. Heavily decorated! A wide freehanded band of cobalt blue at top and bottom. The band at bottom obviously took 2 swipes to satisfy the potter. just below top band is a hand done double spray of leaves and grapes stretching from handle to handle. Below this are the names done in an arch. Then a medallion and then Palatine, W.VA. Then a 4 for gal size and lastly that great 2-swipe band of blue. Each handle has a wide swipe of blue around the corners. Crock is slightly out of round. a VERY FINE hairline runs about 8 inches vertically on left side of design.[photo] just barely can be seen. Crock rings true. Lastly, a kiln run down front [photo] and obviously some kiln staining. Please be assured these are all very minor things and do not detract at all from this crocks great beauty and desirability. It is rare to find one with this much great blue and the hand-done grape and leaf decoration is wonderful. No chips or any other flaws, a fine addition to any stoneware collection, more so a WVA collection. I have collected a long time and this is only the second piece with these names I have seen. |
