Jas. Hamilton & Co.
Greensboro, PA
5 Gallon Crock with Rose Stencil
Item No. 23-033-50

"WOW". What a beauty. This crock is beautifully painted with lots of blue. It is marked Jas.Hamilton & Co., Greensboro, Pa. It is 5 Gal in size. It is 15 1/2" high and 9" across the top. It has what appears to be a rose in the center and snowflakes and leaves also. It has about 4 1/2" of a chip under the top of the bottom of the edge as shown in the picture. It has no cracks or any other damage. This damage that I have noted does take away from it's value but still a large and beautiful piece of stoneware. The bigger the better!!!

Brief History

The Hamilton brothers from New Brighton, Pa. were the first real competition for the Boughners with their arrival in 1850. James and William (Leet) Hamilton had been in the potting business for at least ten years in the vicinity of New Brighton before they moved to Greensboro. The Hamiltons first established James Hamilton & Company. This partnership continued until 1857 when Leet separated and set up as Hamilton & Company. In 1866, Leet Hamilton formed a partnership with his son-in-law, John Jones, to become Hamilton & Jones, a rival in size to James Hamilton & Company. James continued with his own company until 1880 when he sold out to T. F. Reppert. Pottery can be found marked “T. F. Reppert Successor to James Hamilton & Co.,” evidently a ploy by Reppert to hold the business Hamilton had established.
